The ruler of Thondamandalam, Akasharaja, and his queen Dharanidevi yearned for a child but remained childless despite their prayers and efforts.

Akasharaja decided to perform a yagna (sacrificial ritual) to seek divine intervention. During the preparation of the sacrificial ground, the couple discovered a beautiful girl nestled within a thousand-petal lotus. A divine voice urged the king to raise the child with love and care, and she was named Padmavathi, signifying her association with the lotus (Padma).

As Padmavathi grew into a young woman of exceptional beauty and virtue, her fame spread far and wide. It was during this time that Lord Venkateshwara, hearing of her divine qualities, embarked on a journey to meet her. Upon meeting Padmavathi, Lord Venkateshwara was captivated by her celestial radiance and purity of heart.

The marriage of Lord Srinivasa and Goddess Padmavathi took place amidst great pomp and splendour, symbolizing the divine. The grandeur of the occasion is celebrated to this day, with devotees commemorating the divine love story through rituals, festivities, and worship.

Tiruchanoor, situated around 5 km from Tirupati, is a renowned pilgrimage town revered as the abode of Goddess Sri Padmavathi Devi, the beloved consort of Lord Venkateswara. This sacred destination is also popularly known as “Alarmelmangapuram,” derived from the Tamil words “Alar” meaning lotus, “Mel” meaning top, “Manga” meaning goddess, and “Puram” meaning town, signifying its association with the goddess atop a lotus.

According to temple legend, Goddess Mahalakshmi incarnated as Padmavathi Devi, emerging from a golden lotus in the centre of Padmasarovaram, the temple tank. This divine event led to the fame of the place as “Alarmelmangapuram,” emphasizing the goddess’s association with the lotus.

Pilgrims hold a strong belief that visiting Padmavathi Devi and seeking her divine blessings before embarking on a pilgrimage to Lord Venkateswara in Tirumala is auspicious and essential. This tradition reflects the reverence and devotion devotees hold towards the divine consort of Lord Venkateswara, seeking her blessings for a successful and fulfilling pilgrimage.

The significance of Tiruchanur and the worship of Goddess Padmavathi Devi play a crucial role in the spiritual journey of devotees, underscoring the interconnectedness of the divine couple and the importance of seeking blessings from both the consorts before visiting Lord Venkateswara in Tirumala.
